April’s Birthstone: Diamond

17 Apr, 2018

“If Diamond is your birthstone and you have a husband or partner who loves buying you Diamonds,” says Kiki, “then lucky you!” The birthstone tradition is believed to date back to a breastplate that contained 12 gemstones representing the 12 tribes of Israel and according to many legends, wearing a gemstone during its assigned month heightened its healing powers.

April’s birthstone is Diamond. Diamonds have been admired for centuries – ancient civilisations believed that they were created when lightning struck rock – and some historians estimate they were traded as early as 4BC. The name refers to its hardness – the Greek adamas, for unconquerable – because there is no comparable stone. Its cutting resistance is an awesome 140 times greater than that of Ruby and Sapphire, the gemstones next in hardness after Diamond.

In 1477, Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned the very first Diamond engagement ring on record for his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy, and the current trend for Diamond engagement rings shows no sign of slowing down (Google returns a huge 1.9 million results). They’re also popular for eternity rings and 60th or 75th wedding anniversaries.

Kiki believes that, when it comes to gemstones, “a girl’s best friend is what suits her face. Diamonds are beautiful – in terms of brilliance and clarity – but they’re not the be-all and end-all anymore. I use them to add sparkle to pieces and there are lots of ways to wear them that are flattering and fun.” So Diamond earrings in Kiki’s collections come in the form of contemporary drops, hoops and studs, nearly always combined with a beautiful coloured gemstone such as Citrine. Diamond bracelets and Diamond necklaces are similarly modern – the Memories Animal Bracelets are subtly charming while the heart necklaces combine Diamonds with gemstones, such as Morganite, Blue Topaz and Green Amethyst, to striking effect.
