Royal Amethyst: February’s Striking Gemstone

The birthstone of February, beautiful amethyst is an eye-catching shade of royal purple and has a rich history. Worn and treasured for hundreds of years, amethyst was named from the Greek word ‘ametusthos’ which means ‘not intoxicated’. Thought to prevent drunkenness, wine-loving ancient Greeks would drink out of cups adorned with amethyst and wear the stone as amulets around their necks to appease Dionysus, God of wine and pleasure.
Once considered equal in value to rubies and emeralds, amethyst was worn in the Middle Ages by the English aristocracy to represent their royal status and was championed in Russia by Catherine the Great.
Amethyst Cushion Detachable Drops
Due to its connection with royalty, amethyst can be found in many spectacular pieces in the jewellery archives of the British Royal Family. St Valentine is also said to have worn an amethyst ring carved with an image of Cupid, so this gem is fitting for the month of love.
First introduced to the brand in the late 80s, Kiki McDonough has been working with amethyst for almost four decades. An extremely wearable gemstone, amethyst looks spectacular set in both yellow and white gold, and even better when accompanied by diamonds. Found in all our core collections, we have the perfect piece of amethyst fine jewellery for you.
